Parental Substance Abuse and Child Social and Emotional Functioning

Children may be forced into a parental role by parents who can no longer function independently. Spouses may hide their addictions from their partners, lying about their actions or expenditures. Parents of addicted children may go to great lengths to rescue a son or daughter from a destructive lifestyle, only to experience the heartbreak of seeing their child return to that lifestyle again and again.

Quality addiction treatment will not only target the individual with addiction but also give critical support and education to family members, fostering a holistic approach to recovery. Family counseling serves as a therapeutic bridge, encouraging open communication, restoring trust, and providing coping strategies. These therapies, when combined, contribute to a comprehensive framework that rebuilds familial relationships, fosters resilience, and guides the entire family toward long-term recovery and healing. Across these studies, there were 42,599 children/participants, with the age range across the included studies varying from 1.5 years to 20 years but predominantly focusing from 0–12 years (Table 2). Experiences in childhood have been shown to have a significant impact both on concurrent health and development in later life 1–4. Recovery from addiction is a journey that spans personal, social, and systemic challenges. The data reflect an urgent need to expand treatment capacity, tailor prevention for the most vulnerable demographics, and address the social determinants fueling substance abuse. This multifaceted approach includes everything from investing in youth programs and education to ensuring equitable insurance coverage for effective treatment modalities.

• Very few studies provided information on household socioeconomic status, malnutrition, or stunting.
• Research that has been conducted more recently has used control groups with non-ACOAs to see whether the behaviors align with prior research.
• Cultural constructs and institutional marginalization are likely to impact AUD recovery among racial and ethnic minority groups in varying ways.
• It is essential to assess for active substance abuse in the immediate and extended family.
